After a week and a half of exercises in the Adriatic and Mediterranean, Standing NATO Maritime Group Two (SNMG2) is in port after its deployment, and resupplying in Souda Bay, Crete.
The multinational integrated task group is made up of the guided-missile destroyer USS Forrest Sherman, Spanish Navy frigate Almirante Juan de Borbon, Turkish Navy frigate TCG Kemalreis, and Hellenic Navy frigate HS Kountouriotis. Earlier this year, Allies agreed to enhance NATOâs presence in the east of the Alliance by establishing four new multinational battlegroups in Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania and Slovakia (in addition to the existing battlegroups in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland, which have been in place since 2017). From 16 to 18 September 2022, the Allied Chiefs of Defence gathered for their annual conference, in Tallinn, Estonia. For the first time, Finland and Sweden attended the Military Committee Conference as NATO Invitees.
